Inside the Workshop: How We Make Your Shoes

Every pair of Steady Step shoes starts the same way: with your feet, not a factory mould.

First, we take your measurements

When you come into the workshop, we measure both feet. Width, length, arch height, heel width. Most people's feet are slightly different from each other. We account for that.

The measurements take about 15 minutes. If you have any specific concerns, like one foot that swells by afternoon or a high instep, tell us. We factor that in.

Then we choose the leather

For standard styles, we work with the leathers we keep in stock. For custom orders, we can source specific colours or grades. We show you what we have, you pick what fits your order.

Cutting and lasting

We cut the leather pieces by hand against a paper pattern made to your measurements. The upper pieces, the parts you see, and the lining pieces are cut separately.

Lasting is where the upper gets pulled tight over the shoe last, a foot-shaped form, and attached to the insole. This shaping stage is what determines how well the shoe holds its form over time. We take our time here.

Stitching the welt

On our dress shoes and oxfords, we stitch a welt: a narrow strip of leather that connects the upper to the sole. It takes longer than cementing, but it means the sole can be replaced when it wears down. A welted shoe can last years longer than a glued one.

Finishing

We trim and sand the edges, dye the edges to match the leather, and apply a finish to the upper. Then the shoes rest for a day before we call you.

Pickup and fitting

When you come to collect your shoes, you try them on in the workshop. If anything feels off, we adjust before you leave.

Standard styles take 7 to 10 days. Fully custom orders take 2 to 3 weeks. If you want to see the workshop yourself, come in anytime. Walk-ins are welcome.
