How to Make Your Custom Leather Shoes Last Longer
July 8, 2026
Leather shoes made to your measurements already start with an advantage: they fit. A shoe that fits correctly gets less strain on the seams and less friction on the lining. That is why custom shoes often last longer than off-the-shelf ones, even before you factor in care.
Here is what you can do to extend that lifespan further.
Let them rest between wears
Leather needs time to dry out after a day on your feet. If you wear the same pair every day, moisture builds up inside the shoe and the leather starts to degrade from the inside. Rotate with at least one other pair so each gets a day to breathe.
Use cedar shoe trees
A shoe tree inserted right after you take off your shoes absorbs moisture and holds the shape of the upper while the leather dries. Cedar is best because it also absorbs odour. If you don't have shoe trees, stuff the shoes loosely with newspaper.
Clean off dust and mud promptly
Use a soft dry cloth or brush to remove surface dust after each wear. If the shoes get muddy, let the mud dry completely before brushing it off. Wiping wet mud around the leather can push it into the pores.
Condition the leather every few weeks
Leather is skin. It dries out if you do not condition it. Use a small amount of leather conditioner or shoe cream on a cloth, work it into the leather in small circles, and buff off the excess. This keeps the leather supple and prevents cracking at the flex points.
Polish for protection
A good shoe polish adds colour depth and a thin protective layer on top of the leather. Polish every few weeks or when the leather looks dull. Use a polish that matches the leather colour.
Avoid soaking them in rain
If your shoes get caught in heavy rain, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry at room temperature. Never put them near a heat source like a radiator or in direct sunlight. Heat dries leather too fast and causes it to crack.
Get the sole repaired when it thins
Our welted shoes can be resoled. When you notice the sole wearing down at the heel or toe, bring them in before it wears through completely. A resole at the right time costs far less than a new pair.
